Fashion Island Window

Our good friends over at American Rag Cie invited us to do window displays for both their LA and Fashion Island stores. We of course were estatic and said "hell yes!" This morning we installed the Fashion Island display with a cool nautical theme we have been into over here as well as some of Sarah Waldorf's amazing photography. Check out the kid in the Wellen trunks! He knows how to ball! Go check it out if you are in the area.

Surf Indian Display

Recently I was asked to create our own build out at Surf Indian in San Diego to feature all the sweet WELLEN product. Originally, I was a little apprehensive about the thought of building a build out from scratch until I remember that my good friend Tom Vessella and I are an undefeatable woodworking mastercraftsman duo when we work togethor in the workshop. So, with a little In N Out and and a quick trip to Home Depot we dominated with 2 floating shelves and a really cool rack for hangers. All in a mere 10 hours. No Big Deal.

THE MYTHICAL SHOP.
FRAMING.
2 FRAMES READY
GLUING IT ALL UP.
CLAMPED AND READY TO GO.

1 shelf down.

WHAT CRAFTSMANSHIP. Its all in the details.

ENTER SANDMAN!

The Shelves awaiting their clear natural stain.
This is the finished edge with dowels and everything all stained and ready to go.

Yesterday went to the rereopening of The Surf Gallery with Dave Allee from Almond Surf Shop. It was super fun and a great time was had by all. The art was so cool. One of those times I wish I had a few thousand dollars to blow on art. Check it.

Cold Surf

I have been surfing out in front of my studio lately, on the beautiful white snow beaches of Maine.
There has been great swell recently and nobody around....except for a few seals and the occasional lobsterman.
Sometimes when I wake up and check it, I pretend I'm going to paddle out somewhere tropical, and I imagine the beach filled with bikini clad girls all waving at me, drinking fruity drinks and suffering from strap malfunctions and lonliness, I see a sailboat docked out front with some people sipping cosmos on the deck. The skipper yells, "Ty the shrimp are on the grill, it will be another minute before the tuna burgers are done though, and hey the misuse says she can do the massage now or after you finish surfing"........all of which fades quickly on the first duckdive, reminding me that water can actually get hard in this climate.

John in PV

Check out John, on one of our boards getting a nice little turn in this last week in PV.

Snow Dump

Today the weather report is saying up to ten inches of snow...
Many are grabbing shovels and salt in preparation for the dumping. I'm looking at plane tickets in hopes of getting to a warmer climate for a "thaw" session...
This summer I spent a month in a warm tropical place, with waves, killer views, nightlife, and the occasional boat trip, however even with all that, there is something to be said for a quiet day drinking tea watching a snow blanket tuck a town to sleep.....and you don't need sunblock for that.

Retro Log pt. 1

Check out these pics of an amazing longboard shaped by Wellen resident shaper Roy Sanchez for Garrett Byrum, who created our website and does a ton of photography. Garrett did a cool little blog about it and we wanted to share that with you. It comes in two parts. You will be stoked when you see the final board pics.

"yesterday i had the pleasure of hanging out in Bonita, CA with surfboard shaper Roy Sanchez to watch him shape my new board… this guy is legend. he has an epic collection of old surfboards dating back to the 60’s. has some of the earliest editions of surfer / surfing magazine. and is skilled like no other.

i’ve only seen one board being shaped before in person and it wasn’t one for me. so this was a really special occasion for me. and i cant tell you how stoked i was the whole time." - Garrett Bryum, Photographer and proud board owner.
